First Silent Saturdays this Saturday Sept 19th

This Saturday September 19th is our first of two this year.

  • Coaches are asked not to yell any direction to players. They can give instruction quietly on the sideline and provide coaching input at half time only.
  • Parents can still clap, but are asked not to say anything to players during play- be creative by bringing a rally towel or making fun signs
  • Parents and Coaches are strongly encouraged to explain to players/kids the purpose of Silent Saturday (see below) and why they are following the directions of the event;
  • Board members will be monitoring how coaches and parents follow these Silent Saturday directions.

This year PHMSA sets aside two weekends in the Fall season as a ‘Silent Saturday’. PHMSA’s Silent Saturday is not intended as a stunt or a weird experiment; it’s designed to provide an opportunity for parents and coaches alike to recognize how significantly reducing ‘on-the-ball’ coaching can greatly increase our league’s ability to foster player development.

“But I love cheering my kid on and helping her on the field when she is confused. Don’t take our right to cheer our kids on away from us!”

Kids need to make their own decisions in soccer, right or wrong, to develop as successful players. This helps them think on their feet during a game and not rely on the instructions yelled from the sidelines. (which they usually can’t hear much of anyway!)

Playing soccer as a kid is an amazing thing, and together we should do everything possible to avoid ‘on-the-ball’ verbal instruction from parents or coaches from intruding or even ruining the experience. Watch and share this video, featuring Deputy Executive Director Scott Gimple discussing “Silent Saturdays” on the Hallmark Home & Family Channel.

PHMSA is an all volunteer organization and greatly appreciates everything you as parents and coaches do to make this league such a success. We hope that you and your player benefit from this weekend’s experience.
