What is Select Soccer?
Select Soccer is a more competitive season that begins practice in December, with “Select Season” games in January through March followed by soccer tournaments in April and May (usually ending Memorial Day). PHMSA Select teams typically play other AYSO Select teams. We may also play against club teams in scrimmages and possibly in certain tournaments.
Who is eligible for Select Soccer?
Anyone who played in the PHMSA “House” season in any age bracket from U10 through U19, boys and girls, is eligible to tryout and play Select Soccer. (Players must have participated in 50% of their team’s games to be eligible.)
Who should try out for Select Soccer?
In a word: EVERYONE!
Players who are enthusiastic about soccer and want to improve their skills are definitely encouraged to try out. You do not have to be a soccer star…just eager and physically willing to learn and grow.

What else should a player know about Select Soccer?
Select Soccer is fun—both personally for the player and “soccer” fun. This means players will make new friends who share their enthusiasm for soccer. They will work hard at improving their soccer skills. They will become better soccer players…and know it.
While working hard, they become a team…and make new, deeper friendships as they strive for common goals.
PHMSA Select teams play other like-minded, talented teams. We play in tournaments that will involve several games in a single weekend. Within the context of practices, games and tournaments, players experience great satisfaction and build self-confidence in their newly developed more skillful soccer play.
What if my child plays other sports?
We understand that in the younger age brackets especially, your player may not be ready to exclusively commit to soccer. With that in mind, families and coaches have successfully juggled sports in the past. Whether that is right for your family and your Select team depends on you and your commitment to soccer. If you have any concerns we recommend that your player tryout for Select. Then find out who the coaches are for your age group and discuss it with them.
What are Select coaches looking for in a player?
Soccer skill is certainly one of the criteria for getting picked for Select. But so is enthusiasm, great sportsmanship and passion for soccer. Family support is critical! The best advice is that if Select soccer sounds right to you and your player, then by all means try out.

What does Select Soccer cost?
The cost for Select soccer will be about $210.00. This includes league expenses, player home/away uniforms, pennies for teams, and covers the entrance fee to four or five exciting tournaments.
Additional expenses: Optional warm up suit and/or hooded sweatshirt (players/teams usually like one or the other). Most teams play in one (maybe two) tournaments that call for a hotel room. Also, because games are played over a wider area, including Davis and Nevada (once), there is more transportation cost (although ridesharing is commonplace).
What is the commitment?
Select lasts from December through May. Teams practice at least twice a week and practice may include weekends. Flexibility is a must—the game schedule for the regular season is just a starting point. Most teams add additional scrimmages so that there may be more than one game on a weekend as well as mid-week games. The Select Season is most successful when the entire family (or at least one of the parents and the Select Player) shares a passion for soccer.
What you will find though is this “commitment” is much more like fun, than work. Nearly every player, parent, and family who winds up playing Select…ENJOYS the Select experience! The practices are like getting together with friends in a structured framework, games become events where families get to know one another, traveling to exotic (sic…Davis, the Delta, once to Nevada) becomes an adventure!
