Interplay Program

The purpose of the Interplay program is to offer an environment within PHMSA and within AYSO for those players looking to play at a higher, more competitive level. The Interplay teams are formed with the goal of continued player development. Players on Interplay teams need to be committed to a higher training regimen and to playing against stronger competition. Interplay teams will play other AYSO Interplay teams and may scrimmage non-AYSO teams. Travel to the surrounding regions (MDSA, Concord, Davis, American Canyon, etc; as well as to the Peninsula) is involved. It is up to each team to choose which tournaments they wish to participate in, with approval from the Interplay Committee. Tournament travel may also involve locations beyond the Bay Area. In addition, each team can decide if they wish to participate in an Indoor or Futsal winter league.

A higher level of commitment is expected from both the players AND the parents. Interplay is for enthusiastic and motivated players. For the purposes of player development, a player is expected to regularly attend training sessions and matches. Parents are also expected to participate in league organization, such as Soccerfest tournament and Open Registrations events for House and Select.

Within the Interplay program, every coach, referee and administrator must adhere to the six AYSO philosophies: Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Open Registration, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development. Coaches must follow the AYSO principle of 50% minimum playing time for each player on an Interplay team.

Players on an Interplay team do not need to participate concurrently on a Fall (“House”) team. This will allow the players on the Interplay team to play a more reasonable schedule of matches with only one team, and lead to higher development of individual skills and team play. This format is also intended to reduce conflicts between Interplay tournaments and the primary Fall schedule.

The 2017 Interplay season will run one year from approximately March 1, 2017 to approximately December 1, 2017. It is mandatory for each Interplay team to have a minimum of two resting periods throughout the season where no matches, scrimmages, or training sessions are held. One of these rest periods is expected to be in Summer June 1, 2017 – June 30, 2017 and December 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018.

Divisions with high school age players will take a hiatus prior to the start of the North Coast Section Winter season from approximately November 7, 2016 to February 22, 2017.

Registration

PHMSA will conduct Interplay tryouts once a year in Mid November. Additionally, we conduct tryouts in early February for High School aged (2002-1997) players and players that previously did not get an opportunity to tryout. The tryouts are open to all players who wish to participate in a competitive soccer team, including players that may have participated in past Interplay seasons, Select seasons, Spring seasons, Fall seasons or who are new to PHMSA. See table above for tryout dates. Established AYSO coaches interested in coaching Interplay teams are encouraged to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What age group will my child by playing?
Answer: In 2015 US Club Soccer and then Norcal Premiere Soccer revised their age guidelines to follow calendar year age groupings vs. the historical school year groupings. The follwing site has a chart that explains Norcal’s implementation rules and contains an age chart that dictates what age group the calendar years will be grouped into.  PHMSA Interplay will be conforming to the Norcal age groupings effective Janaury 1, 2016.  http://norcalpremier.com/home/894044.html

Q: Can I coach a team for the Interplay season?
Answer: Coaching for Interplay is a significant time commitment and we appreciate any AYSO member who is willing to volunteer his or her time to help enrich the lives of our local youth through this advanced program. If you’re interested, please fill out the application by clicking the Interplay Coach Application button and submitting an application before January 10, 2016. The Interplay Committee will evaluate all candidates and inform the volunteers selected before the start of the Interplay season.

Q: What are the required certifications to be an Interplay coach?
Answer: Interplay coaches need to be certified one level higher than is required for the primary Fall (“House”) season for the team’s age division, up to the Advanced Certification. For example, a U10 Interplay coach needs to be U12 certified; a U12 Interplay coach needs to be a certified Intermediate Coach; U14, U16 and U19 coaches need to hold an Advanced Coach Certification.

Q: If my child makes an Interplay team, do I need to register my child for the primary Fall season in addition to the Interplay season?
Answer: No, the Interplay program has been modified to allow players to play on an Interplay team without necessarily having to play in the primary Fall (“House”) season.

Q: If my child makes an Interplay team and they also want to play in the primary Fall season, is this allowed?
Answer:
Yes. However, this is not required or expected as part of the Interplay program. Your child is allowed to play in both the Interplay and the primary Fall (“House”) seasons at the same time. Please be aware that scheduling accommodations between Interplay and Fall games will not be made as in prior years when players were expected to participate in both programs.

Q: With the Interplay program going year round, will there still be Select?
Answer: Yes! There will still be Select teams and a Select season for the players that played in the Fall season. Tryouts for Select will be held as usual towards the end of the Fall season, usually in late September through October.

Q: I already signed up my child for the Fall season. Can I still try out for Interplay and what happens to the Fall fee that I already paid?
Answer: Yes! We encourage all players that wish to play in a more competitive team to try out for Interplay. If your child makes the Interplay team, the fee that you paid for the Fall league will be applied towards the Interplay fee.

Q: Will Interplay players be able to play on the Select team?
Answer: No. The Interplay season is year round. An Interplay player will not be able to play on a Select team. The Select season will continue to be for qualified players that participated in an AYSO Fall season.

Q: Will Interplay teams be able to participate in Select tournaments?
Answer: Interplay teams will be able to participate in open tournaments, including tournaments where Select teams have traditionally participated, such as Comstock Shootout and Concord Cup. At this time, Interplay teams would not be able to participate in tournaments that are currently reserved only for Select teams, such as Davis World Cup or Pacifica Fog Classic. Interplay teams are eligible to participate in many other CYSA and US Club tournaments.

Q: Can my child attend more than one tryout date?
Answer: Absolutely! You child is indeed encouraged to attend as many tryouts as offered.

Q: How long after the tryouts will I be notified if my child has been chosen to play on an Interplay team?
Answer: You will be notified no later than 21 days after the final tryout date whether your child has been selected for an Interplay team or not.

Q: What days of the week will Interplay matches be played? Answer: Interplay matches will typically be played on the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday. Your coach may schedule some scrimmages during the week.

Q: If I registered and paid fees to play Interplay and need to withdraw can I get a refund? Answer: Interplay players are given four to six weeks to make a decision about playing.
